SPECIAL NEEDS SHELTERS Sarasota County provides a shelter program for those residents requiring special medically related care. Special needs shelters will be available for persons requiring more skilled medical care than available in a public shelter but not requiring an acute care facility such as a hospital. If this type of extended care is needed, contact the Sarasota County Emergency Management offce at 941-861-5000 or go online to www.scgov.net to be considered for registration into this program.
The Suncoast Center for Independent Living (SCIL) in Sarasota celebrated the 27th Anniversary of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) on Wednesday, July 26th.
Winn Dixie Store #654 of Sarasota, received the SCIL ADA Empowerment Award recognition if their unselfish service and outstanding contributions of SCIL.
Jennifer Corinis, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida, was a special guest speaker. Her practice focuses on Civil Rights enforcement, primarily involving the ADA. Rodger cline, Operating Director of Fat Daddios Pizza addressed the benefits of ADA compliance for businesses as the event’s other guest speaker.
The signing of the ADA in 1990 was a critical step in the forward momentum of Centers for Independent Living across the country.
